In business for almost 30 years, TeksMed Services knows well the challenges of disability management.
“Our forward-thinking approach to disability management leads us towards new and inventive ways to minimize time loss and maximize employee wellbeing, such as the implementation of expedited health care and a number of mental health solutions,” says Martin Paquette, vice president, innovation and growth at the company headquartered in Chilliwack, BC.
And when the pandemic hit, TeksMed looked for ways to support Canadian employers, he says.
“Restrictions put in place by health and government officials also lead to a number of our clients temporarily decreasing or even closing operations, unfortunately. We worked with them to the best of our abilities – including rate reviews and provision of a free access to a mental wellness app – so that they could weather the storm.”
Physical health wasn’t the only concern, given the dramatic rise in mental health issues during the pandemic.
“Now, we have much more frequent recognition awards because we want to celebrate people staying at CAAT and recognize the contributions that they bring to the organization”

“Employers seemed to grow more appreciative of how absenteeism, presenteeism, decreased productivity, and burnout as a result of poor mental health had a significant impact on their business,” he says.
“Education for those in leadership positions on how to cultivate a psychologically safe workplace is a great place to start.”
TeksMed’s chief mental health officer hosts valuable mental health webinars and workshops to support employers with those initiatives.
“Mental health claims need to be tactfully managed to ensure that the claim process itself does not impede the worker’s recovery. Compassionate communication, treatment facilitation, and suitable duty modification are all vital to supporting an individual throughout a mental health claim,” says Paquette.
Decreased wait times for health care are an ongoing priority at TeksMed, as delays often lead to unnecessarily long absences and claim durations.
“One of our key differentiators as a service provider is our ability to leverage our health care network across the country and expedite medical assessments,” he says.
As an example, the Fraser Institute’s 2021 report found the average wait time for an MRI is 10.2 weeks and for a specialist consultation, it’s 11.1 weeks. The average wait times for the same appointments with TeksMed were only half a week and one week, respectively.
“When our return-to-work coordinators see that a worker could benefit from a diagnostic scan or specialist consultation, we expedite the appointment to ensure the patient is seen as quickly as possible, which leads to faster treatment and a quicker recovery,” says Paquette.
Of course, the return to work is a crucial part of disability management, so TeksMed prioritizes personalized recovery.
“Return-to-work plans, health care recommendations, and viable modified duties must always respect and abide by the ability of the employee. Making sure the individual is cared for, with their wellbeing and recovery top of mind, not only protects the best interests of valued workers, but ultimately leads to better rehabilitative outcomes,” he says.
Looking ahead, TeksMed remains focused on service excellence and innovation, says Paquette.
“What pushes us forward is a desire to be the best disability management firm in the country, and we are so honoured to have been voted as an industry leader.”
