BMO Financial Group has been passionately focused on learning and development for many years. Building on the strong foundation established with BMO’s corporate university – the Institute for Learning – almost 30 years ago, the company has continued to innovate through a range of virtual, hybrid and digital experiences and skill-building priorities.
BMO’s learning opportunities now range from mobile and immersive options – anywhere, any time, in the palm of employees’ hands – to bite-sized learning through e-books, podcasts, text messages and videos, as well as face-to-face classroom opportunities, coaching and mentoring. These experiences enable employees to build their skills while also earning meaningful credentials through a range of digital badges, certifications, diplomas and degrees.
“Our learning strategy focuses on ensuring we have an engaged, skilled and future-ready workforce,” says Gina Jeneroux, chief learning officer at BMO Financial Group.
The company creates opportunities for all employees to learn and gain new experiences. “We’re betting on the great people we have – giving them opportunities to build skills, stretch and grow – to equip them with the skills they need for their job, their career, for the future of work, and as they follow their interests and personal passions,” she says.
Digital transformation – including upskilling and reskilling employees in areas such as cloud and data & analytics – is a critical focus of the company. More than 4,000 employees are already engaged in tech-focused skills programs to help them build and deepen cutting-edge digital skills. BMO is also accelerating skill-building in the areas of innovation and problem-solving, says Jeneroux.

“We know that the problems in front of us as a society may be ones we’ve never tackled before. We need to ensure people have the skills to be successful, and they’re prepared for the future – for themselves, for the company and, most importantly, for our customers.”
Learning is also helping to advance BMO’s focus on inclusion – a core value at the company. BMO’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, Zero Barriers to Inclusion, is intentional in creating a workplace where every employee feels they can bring their authentic self to work. BMO has launched a number of inclusion-focused programs, including understanding Indigenous perspectives in Canada – completed by more than 25,000 employees and 20,000 customers and people across the community – and new programs on the Black experience in North America, Allyship for the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and “Learn from Difference” to promote a broad culture of inclusion.
“These education and awareness-focused programs are vital for promoting equality and equity – both inside the bank, and for the customers and communities we serve. They are directly linked to BMO’s purpose and values, and they are powerful learning resources to eliminate barriers to inclusion across the organization,” says Vanessa Lewerentz, BMO’s chief inclusion officer.
BMO’s focus on digital skills and culture-building includes a keen focus on human skills, including helping employees build greater resilience and well-being, and equipping them to navigate a rapidly changing world. Jeneroux highlights that the focus on being more agile is “not just in agile methodology but being truly nimble and ensuring our employees are prepared for anything.”
